All HAL is breaking loose.
The news has been filled with stories about a new generation of artificial intelligence (AI) applications. They said these new AI programs are currently helping students cheat, and may eventually steal your job. That sounded pretty concerning — especially for people like me who work in IT — so I thought I should take a closer look.
So yeah, it looks like we’re all pretty much screwed. Eventually.
But not just yet. In the meantime, I figured I might as well try to have some fun with this whole thing, at least until it reaches a stage of development where it can stop me. Right now the algorithms seem to lean toward literal interpretations of data, a fairly overbearing attitude of political correctness, and general prissiness. It’s like Mr. Spock before his first cup of coffee, and he grew up in Berkley rather than on Vulcan.
AI currently seems to have a fairly limited sense of humor. Maybe they can eventually program that in, too. But for now at least, the jokes are still up to us. So laugh it up — while you still can.
